ALEXANDRA HERNANDEZ

Elementary Art

Hello! I recently married, and took my husband's name, so I am now going by Mrs. Hernandez, and will no longer be using my maiden name, Ms. Lower.

I am happy to be teaching Art at both Susitna and Eagle River Elementary School.

The Anchorage School District Elementary Art program is made up of four components: aesthetic perception, art heritage, creative expression, and aesthetic valuing.
Through this multifaceted approach to art, children will learn to better understand, appreciate and talk about art, as well as create art. Content for the art curriculum is derived
from a broad range of visual arts including folk, applied, and fine arts from locations all over the world and representative of various periods in history. The art curriculum
allows students to experience a variety of different art media throughout the year in the production of their own art.

The Art curriculum includes a developmentally appropriate theme for each grade level:
Kindergarten: Art and Me
1st Grade: Art in My World
2nd Grade: Creating From Within Myself
3rd Grade: Art and the Environment
4th Grade: Art From May Cultures
5th Grade: Art As Communication
6th Grade: Arts Impact on the World

In addition to themes, the Art curriculum includes three artists, which were selected with consideration of student age and interests, for each grade level:
Kindergarten: Mary Cassatt, Joan Miro, and David Smith
1st Grade: Paul Klee, Henri Rousseau, and Alexander Calder
2nd Grade: Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, and Henry Moore
3rd Grade: Winslow Homer, Vincent Van Gogh, and Red Grooms
4th Grade: Peter Brueghel, Victor Vasarely, and Maria Martinez
5th Grade: Romare Bearden, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Claus Oldenburg
6th Grade: Leonardo da Vinci, Pablo Picasso, and Michaelangelo Buonarroti
