Transfer Grades in Zangle!

Suppose you get a transfer student into your class with a single transfer grade. You have several options:

(I have not heard of any of these as 'official' policy. You may check to find out which is or use as you see fit)

When a student is entered into your class, Zangle automatically puts a gray box around every assignment that is before the transfer date.

I. Ignore the transfer grade.

If the student has done poorly before, is hoping to 'turn over a new leaf', and there is still significant time left in the grading period, some teachers excuse the student from previous assignments. They figure that it's a big enough transition to start new classes in a new city; let them get a fresh start. (If the transfer is just before progress reports, some teachers put in their transfer grade for one or two assignments so that a grade is shown, but then take them back out if the student improves.)

II. Put the transfer grade into every assignment that is listed before the student transfered in.

If you don't type anything into a 'not enrolled' box, it is not counted by Zangle. If you do type in a grade, the assignment is automatically added in. Zangle has a very convenient way to do this.

Edit the individual student and look for the Late Enrollment Assignments link in the upper right. Click on that and you will see the assignments listed. If you enter the percentage of the transfer grade, you can fill all of them automatically by clicking on the Apply Default Score.

Or you can enter grades one by one.

If the student transferred from one section of your class to another, you have the opportunity to make a direct transfer of grades. It's pretty cool!

This is mathematically sound, but implies the student did those assignments.

III. Create a new assignment, 'Transfer Grade' and assign it the total number of points that have been assigned to the class up to that point.

This is the fanciest way to do it, but takes extra effort to set up. Excuse everyone except the transfer student from the assignment. If you grade with weighted categories, you probably should do a grade for each category.

IV. Put the transfer grade into every other assignment.

Some teachers enter the transfer grade for every other assignment, which gives the base of the grade, but does not weight it as much. This will emphasize the grades in your class more than the transfer grade.

You could use the method in section II, but then remove half of the grades.
