Grade level 9. Two semesters
(Semesters are Life science Semester 1: Physical Science Semester 2)
Prerequisite: 8th grade Science.
This course will include a study of metrics, chemistry, respiration, photosynthesis, body systems. Cell division, DNA, and enzyme action will also be covered. The course also includes an extensive treatment of introductory botany, zoology, ecology and genetics.
Semester 2
This course will be the physical portion of IS9. Topics covered during this semester will be weather, astronomy, Geology and physics.

Course Expectations, Evaluation,
& General Information

IS9 is a course designed to prepare students for biology. Biology I is a course applying basic science concepts and principles to problem solving. Effective study skills and life skills that will provide you with the skills to succeed both in school and on a job will be emphasized along with the regular curriculum.
I expect that each of you will do the work required of you and that everyone in the class will pass. However, whether or not that expectation holds true depends on YOU.

Notebook dividers (can be made)

Metric ruler
Zippered pouch for pen and pencil

GRADING
Your grade in this class will be based on accumulated point scores from homework, daily work, current events, notebook organization, participation, quizzes, lab reports, a project or presentation, tests and a semester exam.

Homework = 20 pts
Classwork = 10-50 pts
Participation = 20 pts
Quizzes = 10-30 pts
Lab Reports = 50 pts
Project/Presentation = 50 pts
Tests = 50-100 pts
Semester Exam = 100 pts

85-100% A
75-84.9% B
65-74.9% C
55-64.9% D
0-54.9% F


HOMEWORK
Will be classwork that was not completed during the normal class time. It is due the next day that we meet!

LATE WORK
Late work can only be late for a week! After that it will NOT be accepted. You will suffer a 40% decrease for late work.

MAKE UP WORK
It is your responsibility to ask for and pick up make up assignments. You have one school day for every day missed to make up work, unless it is a pre-arranged absence, upon which your assignments are due when you return to class.

TESTS
Tests may be repeated for a two week period until you earn a 70%. However, a 70 % is the highest grade you may earn on a re-take.

EXTRA CREDIT
Is not available.

LABS
A lab must be written in ink or typed, according to the science department format. Safety rules must be followed at all times. Informal labs may not require lab reports.

Zangle
All Grades will be posted for students and parents to use. Each parent has a username and password.
Students should ask the front office, Ms. Elise, for their own password.
