Class Introduction:

Course Description:

This two semester course will focus on the study of the United States as a developing player on the world stage the changing world dynamics with the growth of the United States as a world power circa 1800 -2000. This eleventh grade history course will address seven core strands of social science study that will be applied to a variety of U.S. and world content. These strands are: geography, religion/philosophy, the humanities, government, science/technology, economics, and sociology/anthropology.

The essential body of knowledge to be covered in this course is contained in the text: American Anthem. Holt, 2007. This core knowledge will be supplemented with audio/video materials, simulations, mapping, out of class research, and in-class student activities. This overview is designed as a guideline for student planning. The teacher reserves the right to adjust the calendar and assignments when necessary in order to accommodate learning.

TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR WORK. In this course the grade is generated by a combination of assignments and assessments. Assignments include, but are not limited to in-class work, homework, papers, projects and positive participation. Assessments include quizzes and tests. Each category will have a point value and a percentage will be assigned when deriving a student's final grade

General Expectations:
All students are expected to adhere to the policies stated in the Anchorage School District High School Handbook. All students are also expected to adhere to any and all expectations set forth in the classroom including, but not limited to: being on time, being prepared to with notebook, pen, textbook, etc, asking clarifying questions, being respectful to others and their opinions and taking responsibility for the consequences of their actions.

Class points for the semester will be divided between quizzes and class activities. Activities are defined as group activities, research papers, handouts, readings, writings, mapping and illustrated individual projects.

Students and parents can use the class news (below) as a guide to follow weekly assignments and topics covered in the class.

• Daily Assignments & readings

• Maps 40% of grade

Projects:

(Projects will require out of class participation) 15% of grade

Participation:

• Attendance/Participation 10% of grade

Extra Credit: (if assigned)

• Signed progress reports (5 pts each)

• Note book review (5 pts each)

Grade Percentage:

90 – 100% A 80 – 89.9% B 70 – 79.9% C 60 – 69.9% D
