Class Introduction:

Biology Syllabus

A.J. Dimond High School Brett Roth
2005-06’ Room B211

Course Goals:
At the end of this course I ______________, the student, will be able to:
1) Learn and apply the scientific methods
2) Understand the history and development of science.
3) Demonstrate knowledge of the metric system and acknowledge its importance for measurement in science.
4) Learn the significance of carbon to organic molecules
5) Understand that carbon-based molecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids are the building blocks of life
6) Know the enzymes are made of protein and enzymes control reactions in the cells.
7) Demonstrate knowledge of cellular organelles and their function
8) Describe the difference between eukaryotes and prokaryotes
9) Understand the importance of membranes, such as cell membranes, in biology.
10) Understand that cells differentiate to perform specific functions
11) Understand how cells work together to form larger systems (tissues, organs)
12) Know organisms respond and adapt to their environment
13) Know that DNA is how genetic information is passed from parent to offspring
14) Recite the central dogma of genetics: DNA?RNA?Protein
15) Define the term “species”
16) Understand how sexual reproduction results in genetic diversity
17) Understand the mechanisms and potential results of genetic mutations
18) Describe current understandings of biological evolution
19) Discuss current events in biology such as diseases or experimental agriculture.
20) Understand that evolution does not imply long-term progress in some set direction but random and based on natural selection.
21) Understand that species with genetic diversity are more likely to survive
22) Describe the history of plant earth and the development of life on earth
23) Understand and apply taxonomy
24) Describe the flow of energy through ecosystems and limits on that energy
25) Describe the process of oil and coal production and what happens when it is burned.
26) Describe succession in ecosystems
27) Describe why ecosystems and the biosphere are currently not stable

This plan will help prepare you for advanced study of science, either at DHS, college or elsewhere. This course will also enable you to answer questions using a formal method, which is useful in many aspects of life. For students who find the above goals too difficult or demanding, I offer after school tutoring that will enable them to achieve a satisfactory grade. I am available after school almost every for individual help with projects or other work.
