Welcome to Science!
Hello, my name is Jon Dykstra and it is my pleasure to be your student’s Integrated Science teacher this year. This is my 9th year at Hanshew, for the six years before this I taught at Lake Otis Elementary.
Grades will be based on participation, class/homework, lab reports, quizzes, projects and tests. It is the student’s responsibility to ask for missed work if absent.
Please remind your student to come to class prepared with planner, binder, paper and pencil everyday, and be in their seat ready to learn when the bell rings. If assignments are not completed in class, it is the student’s responsibility to
write the assignment in their planner and complete it for homework. Students may check grades on Zangle in the library before school, after school, or at lunch if they do not have internet access at home. Students will observe the rules
found in their Hanshew Middle School Handbook. Make sure the student and parent/guardian sign the Science Safety Contract (on the other side of this letter). This is necessary in order to participate in lab activities.
I request that all students bring in a composition or single-subject notebook to be used as a Science Notebook. These will primarily stay at school and will be used as an ongoing assessment and reflective tool.
I allow smartphones and tablets to be used in class for research at my discretion. Students should be aware this is on a teacher-by-teacher basis, and otherwise they may only be used before and after school.I am looking forward to a
great year with our team. Please feel free to contact me at dykstra_jonathan@asdk12.org or here at school, 349-1561 if you ever have questions or want to talk. The best times to reach me are 7:30-8:00 am and after 2:45 pm.
Sincerely,
Jon Dykstra, M.Ed.
