BENJAMIN ELBOW

Welcome back to Physical Education at Rogers Park. I’m looking forward to meeting all the students and families and having a great year of movement together.

P.E. SCHEDULE:

Because every child receives 90 minutes of Physical Education instruction each week, Rogers Park requires multiple Physical Education teachers. I work Monday through Friday. As does Mrs. Singleton, though she's at Sand Lake Elementary on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Some classes will have only one of us, while others will see multiple P.E. teachers.

Kindergarten through third grade students have three, 30-minute sessions of P.E. class
each week. Fourth through sixth grade classes have two, 45-minute P.E. classes per week.

P.E. EXPECTATIONS:

Be Safe

Be Responsible

Be Respectful

Be Friendly and Caring

These are our expectations, and we know all of our students are capable of participating successfully in P.E. class. If a student chooses not to follow a rule, they will experience
the following consequences:
*1st time – Warning;
*2nd time – Brief Time Out followed by a quick debrief with the P.E. teacher
*3rd time – Time Out for the remainder of P.E. class.

GRADING:

Kindergarten – These students are assessed every quarter on a few different gross motor skills, following our district’s SBAR (Standards Based Assessment and
Reporting) criteria. The assessments are Running, Galloping, Weight Transfer, Spatial Awareness, Hopping, Sliding, and Physiological Concepts.

First through Third grades – At the end of each P.E. class, students in these grades give themselves a self-evaluation of either a 1, 3, or 5 based on how hard
they tried, how well they listened, and how well they participated. As their teacher, I will either agree with their self-evaluation and write it
down, or tell them why I disagree with their assessment, and write down the grade that I’ve determined. At the end of the quarter, these daily
grades are averaged to determine the student’s quarterly grade.

Fourth though Sixth grades – These students receive an “Effort” grade in PE class that is calculated the same way as the 1st-3rd graders. They also receive an “Achievement”
grade that is determined based on the results of our quarterly Fitness Testing (Mile Run, 30’ Shuttle Run, Sit and Reach, Sit-Ups, Pull-Ups/Push-Ups/Flexed Arm Hang).

Level 1 – Needs Improvement (Not following directions, choosing not to participate, abusing equipment…)

Level 3 – Satisfactory (Cooperating, following directions, showing good sportsmanship…)

Level 5 – Outstanding (Helping others willingly, encouraging and complimenting others, unconditional acceptance…)

OTHER:

Sneakers -- Students should come to P.E. class wearing sneakers (that are tied tightly) and socks every day. If your child doesn't have access to sneakers, let us know and we can get them some to keep.

Healthy Futures – We’re excited to participate in this program once again, so look for these papers to come home in early September, and then again in January.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. I'm looking forward to a great year of movement with your children.
