Welcome to Mrs. Korzon’s math class. I am truly looking forward to getting to know each of you this year.

The Mathematics Department has continued the adoption of new textbooks/curriculum. These books are in line with the current national standards to produce students who are able to explore, conjecture and reason logically; students who can think creatively in solving non-routine problems; students who can communicate mathematically. These skills are considered necessary for success in the ever-changing world in which we live.

This textbook, however, does not guarentee you success in math. Learning math is like building a house, and if you don’t have a good foundation or if you are missing parts of your foundation the house will not stand the “test of time”. It is very important that you play an active role in the classroom and put forth a consistent and concientious effort on the nightly assignments. Every homework problem should be attempted. If you get stuck on a problem, you should look for a similar problem in the book or in the class notes and write down what you can about the problem. You can get additional assistance on a daily basis in Math Tutorial, checkout www.classzone.com or there is an online tutor provided by the State of Alaska Library at sled.alaska.edu/homework.html

I will make every effort to have grades updated weekly for your convenience. Zangle is up and running this year, for both parents and students. BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES: You will need to bring a calculator to class everyday. For Algebra A, you will need a non-graphing calculator and for Algebra 2 and above, you will need a graphing calculator. We use the TI-84 in class demonstrations and for testing. You will also need: graph paper, pencils, red pens (for correcting homework), a three-ring binder with notebook paper (not a spiral notebook), and a straight-edge.

One of my favorite quotes is from Aristotle who said that: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act but a habit.” This means that success is not measured in one-step or a single good grade, but is achieved through repeated practice. I believe that each of you can achieve “Excellence” and I am looking forward to being a partner in realizing that goal.
