"The Spirit Bear" Article of the Week

Details

In order to build background knowledge prior to the class reading of the novel Touching Spirit Bear, students are reading, annotating, and answering comprehension questions to the article "The Spirit Bear". Upon review of students' annotations, the class was given an additional day to complete and/or improve their annotations. A review of annotation* was given by modeling annotating the 2nd paragraph of the article, as well.
The annotation of the article "The Spirit Bear" and the responses to the comprehension questions (including text evidence and reliable, valid independent research) on a separate sheet of paper is due next class period.


*Students are expected to circle unknown or confusing words (ex: "umbrella species" on the first page. Even though it is explained in the article, it is not a term students routinely use and they should circle it and write their understanding of the term in the margin), underline key points within the article (going paragraph by paragraph is an easy strategy to employ), and write the information related to the key point in the margins (paraphrase what was underlined). ? and ! are used in the margins to indicate questions (?) and/or connections (!) made, thought, and ideas related to the reading.
