Committee representation

The committee is voluntary and no compensation is provided for the members who serve a one-year term. Advisory committee members, who meet five times per year, consist of:

  • Student Advisory Board representative

  • Teacher representatives (3)

  • Principal representatives (3)

  • Parent representatives (10)
    Parent may represent these ASD programs: Gifted, Special Education, English Language Learners, Title VI Indian Education, Child in Transition and Migrant Education
  • At-large members (10-20)
    Comprised of businesses, organizations and citizens of Anchorage. At-large members will reflect the ethnic and cultural diversity of the student population:
    • Black
    • Alaska Native/American Indian
    • Asian/Pacific Islander
    • Hispanic
    • Multi-ethnic
    • White

Member qualifications

Consideration is given to the following criteria when selecting individuals for the committee:

 

  • Commitment to improving educational opportunities for students
  • Sincere interest in the welfare of children and in quality education
  • Community involvement and ability to network within the community
  • Working knowledge of the Anchorage community
  • Ability to function effectively as a team member, as well as a leader
  • Ability to motivate others to become engaged and involved
  • Commit to attend five, two-hour committee meetings per year
  • Interest in:
    • Budget
    • Student achievement
    • Parent and community involvement
    • Community relations
    • Curriculum adoption and implementation
    • Cultural competence
    • Equity and other instructional concerns
