About MLMS Bands
The Mirror Lake Band Program is comprised of almost 300 students in five bands that meet daily: Two Beginning Bands, Intermediate I Band, Intermediate II Band, and Concert Band. There is also a Jazz Band that meets before school, four days a week.
JAZZ BAND - before school, 7:15-8:00AM, M-Th
The MLMS Jazz Band is an audition only class open to 7th and 8th graders that meets four days a week before school. The Jazz Band travels each Spring with the Concert Band and has earned top awards in National festivals.
MUSIC EXPLORATORY/INDEPENDENT STUDY - NEW 2014-2015 - 1st hour
8th grade students who are successfully learning their primary instrument and who are in Concert Band may elect to learn a second and/or third instrument in this class. We will also be exploring music composition, rhythm and movement, acapella singing, percussion ensemble, and music technology.
CONCERT BAND - 2nd hour
Concert Band is the highest level of performance available at MLMS. It is only open to 8th graders due to scheduling and usually has between 60 and 80 students. The Concert Band travels each Spring and has earned top awards in National festivals.
INTERMEDIATE I BAND - 3rd hour
Students continuing in the band program are placed in either Intermediate I or II. Many incoming seventh graders join the program as part of this 1st hour class. Students continue to practice fundamentals and begin learning different styles of playing as they integrate more challenging rhythms. Many Intermediate II students elect to learn a second instrument in this class.
BEGINNING BAND - 5th and 6th hour
All sixth graders at MLMS take music classes, five days a week. There are usually anywhere from 100 to 120 students in the Beginning Band, and they are split into two classes which meet in the afternoon. Students in this class learn the fundamentals of playing in an ensemble.
INTERMEDIATE II BAND - 7th hour
This upper level class is for more advanced 7th graders and for those 8th graders who did not get placed in Concert Band. This class accomplishes what Intermediate I does but is able to play 8th grade level music by the second half of the year. Many Concert Band students elect to learn a second instrument in this class.
