PLANNING FOR EMERGENCIES

Safety at School - What you should know

Teachers review at the beginning of each school year the policy and procedures for handling an emergency. Emergency drills are practiced regularly by the staff and parent volunteers. Everyone learns what to do during a fire, earthquake, intruder, or other threats to our children's safety.

Please remind your children to listen to directions during these drills. Children feel safer when they understand and practiced for emergency situations.

In the event of an emergency, it is critical that you help us help your kids. It is important for you to STAY CALM.

Remember an emergency plan is in place that includes a way to get accurate information to you as soon as possible.

Reuniting your child to you as quickly as possible is our primary goal.

If a lock-down procedure is initiated, all access to the building will be controlled through one door only. You may find doors lock or access blocked. This is for your child's safety Go to the main entrance.

Please make sure your child's Emergency Release Information Card is current. Steller Secondary will discharge your child to only those people you predesignate. WE MUST have accurate disaster release information on file.

EVACUATION - Reuniting with your child

In the event of an emergency that requires the evacuation of the main school building, the kids will be sent to our alternative site at North Star Elementary or Wells Fargo Bank depending on the time of day or event.

Please share with your child that they may be moved to the alternative site and that you as the parent will come as soon as possible.

Students are to be cooperative with their teacher who is accountable for their safety. Your child is to stay with the class until instructed otherwise. Remember that students will only be released to prearranged adults.

WHY EMERGENCY PREPARATION?

The staff, principal, and parents want you to know that we take the safety of students seriously.

Together as a group we worked to prepare school policy and procedure, practiced emergency drills, and create this publication to prepare you, your child and our neighborhood for an emergency.

We are proud of our accomplishments in preparation for an emergency and hope you will contact your parent safety representative(s) for more information or questions by calling the school.

A quick overview of the difference between emergencies and disasters, is described as in an emergency the community can handle the situation, but in a disaster, everyone is overwhelmed and resources become exhausted.

There are two different types of disasters which are natural or manmade. Natural disasters consist of earthquakes, hurricances, tornadoes, drought, fires, etc. Manmade disasters can be also devastating from radiation exposures, hazardous material spills, terrorism, transportation accidents, fires, etc.

Thank you in advance for your awareness and attention.
