EMERGENCY PROCEDURES FOR ACCIDENT OR ILLNESS

1) ASSESS THE SITUATION. Be sure the situation is safe before you to approach. The following dangers will require caution: live electrical wires, gas leaks, building damage, fire or smoke, traffic or violence.

2) A responsible adult should stay at the scene and give help until the person designated to handle emergencies arrives.

3) Send word to the person designated to handle emergencies or call 911. This person will take charge of the emergency and render any further first aid needed.

4) DO NOT give medications unless there has been prior approval by the parent or guardian for a minor. If an adult, one needs physician approval.

5) DO NOT move a severely injured or ill student unless absolutely necessary for immediate safety. If moving is necessary, follow guidelines for neck and back injury. Support head and neck by holding head with a "face forward" position. TRY NOT to move neck or head. Pull person in the direction of the head without bending the spine forward. Do NOT drag person sideways. Keep person quiet and warm. Place rolled up towels or clothing on both sides of head so it will not move.

6) Notify parents/legal guardian of a minor of an emergency ASAP to determine the appropriate course of action. If an adult call 911.
