Years Overview
Theme 1:  Silly Stories - Stories with silly characters and funny situations. words with -s, -ed,-ing endings.  Short vowels a, i and VCCV patterns, long vowels CVCe, a, i.  Name parts of sentence. writing traits: Organization - begin middle, and end, and writing sentences.

Theme 2:  Nature Walk - Focus on Fables:  Animals their natural Habitats. Long vowels o,u,e and sounds for “g”. Consonant Clusters (blends) for r.l.s and two sounds for c. Comprehension skills are Compare and contrast, fact and opinion. Writing word choice writing with exclamations and using capital letters.  
   
Theme 3:  Around Town: Neighborhood and Community - Work with Consonant digraphs th, wh, sh, ch, tch, base words and endings with er and est.  vowel pairs  ai, ay and compound words.  writing process - the five parts of a letter. Using different kinds of sentences.

Theme 4: Amazing Animals -r-controlled vowel ar, or, ore, words with nd, nt, mp, ng, nk. Base words and endings -s -es, -ies. Use dictionary: entry words and using a thesaurus.  writing process focuses on research doing an animal report. Using I and me and writing an invitation, poem and news article. 

Theme 5:  Family Time -Using Contractions and er ending in two-syllable words. ending in two-syllable words, contractions and le ending words.  Words with the sound of “y” at the end of longer words, and prefix -un.  The use of verbs that tell about now and about the past.  writing process with paragraphs and responding to a writing prompt. 

Theme 6:  Talent Show - Author’s viewpoint, noting details and problem solving  Vowel pairs oo, ew, ue, ou also using long i (igh and ie) Base words and endings -ed ing (drop final e), and comparing with adjectives.  Writing process Using time-order words and exact verbs. Compare/contrast illustrations and persuasive talk.

Comprehension - able to retell sequence of events without prompting.  Knowing nouns, pronouns, verbs.  Identifies the main idea and orally reads to identify story elements such as: problem events, solution, character traits, and setting. Recognizes prefixes, suffixes, root words and syllable patterns. Continues to practice reading with fluency and uses the reading strategies and cuing systems.
Phonics:  Continues to use phonics for decoding words, such as: vowel diphthongs, digraphs, silent e, ”r” controlled vowels, silent consonants and syllable patterns.
