How to Use the Groups Folders
Many teachers have a folder listed in a shared Groups Folder that allows convenient electronic transfer of files. Teachers access the Groups Folder to obtain (and drop off) a variety of documents.
Access to the folders:
- Dell - District account (lastname_first or lastname.first) : From the Start menu, select My Computer / Groups on ‘sofs01’ / Class_Folders (or Teachers_Info)
- Mac - District account (lastname_first or lastname.first) : When you log in, the Groups icon should show up on your desktop. If it doesn't, change one setting: When looking at the desktop, from the Finder menu, select Preferences. (Not System Preferences - the menu to the right) Make sure the 'Connected servers' is selected. (I would also select 'Hard disks, External disks and CDs, DVDs, and iPods.) Open the Groups icon and select either Class_Folders or Teachers_Info.
- Dell - Local account : From the Start menu, select Run. Type in \\sofs01\groups and press return. You will need to enter the domain and your userid (ASD\lastname_firstname) and your password to authenticate.
- Mac - Local account : From the Go menu, select Connect to Server. Enter smb://sofs01/groups and then enter your user id and password. There are some screenshots on this page, although they refer to your district home folder, not groups.
Access a file in a teacher's folder
- Double-click on the file. This will launch the appropriate application and open it as a 'read-only file.' You cannot save the file back into the teacher's folder, but if you select Save As, you can save it in your folder.
- You can also drag the file from its location to your desktop or documents folder.
Access to Group Folders from home
- The Group Folders are not accessible from outside the ASD firewall. You cannot access them from home.
To Turn in a File
- Make sure that the file that you wish to turn in has your name in the filename.
- Make sure that two windows are open: your own documents folder and the teacher's group folder
- Drag the file from your folder to the Hand In folder. In Windows, you will see a little + next to the icon, meaning that you are making a copy of the file. When you let go, you will get a warning that you won't be able to see the copy; click OK.
- You are done.
