Tryon's Old School Gradebook

A teacher's gradebook is a legal document that is a record of what goes on in the classroom. It is necessary to ensure its integrity. There are two ways of doing this:

• Keep a written/printed copy of all of your grades,with an electronic copy as a backup can be your electronic copy.
• Keep all of your grades electronically with no written/printed copy, but with ‘bomb-proof’ backups.

I have expanded on this with further discussion.

I, personally, have always kept a hand-written gradebook.

• I have found that recording a stack of grades into it is remarkably efficient, being able to move up and down the column quickly.
• By having my attendance and grades on the same page, it is easy to see patterns with students developing.
• By using a number pad, the actual data entry into the gradebook takes only a few minutes.
• It is much more difficult to enter a 'typo' while writing a grade in a gradebook than it is when you are typing them into a computer.
• I print out the names and paste them into the gradebook from ASD Student Extracts because I don't like to type things twice.
• I print out quarter and semester grades and tape them into the gradebook because I don't like to type things twice.
• I have a bound master book that documents what has gone on in my classroom..
