ACADEMIC ENGLISH LEARNERS: SOCIAL STUDIES

Class Introduction:

In this course, students will study geography, U.S. history, economics, government, and the humanities.

Social Studies will prepare students with knowledge and skills needed to become informed participating citizens in our democratic republic and as global citizens. This class will also help students to understand how and why we study world geography and U.S. history. Students will view their world in both a modern and an historical context in relation to the development of the American nation.

Social Studies Course Objectives:
1. Social Studies promotes learning through reading, writing, research, presentation skills, and participatory activities.
2. Social Studies supports the development of critical and abstract thinking skills, which allow students to analyze the impact of geography and history.
3. Social Studies develops and fosters a sense of civic responsibility.
4. Social Studies encourages teaching with interdisciplinary approaches.
