CHEMISTRY I

Class Introduction:

What is Chemistry?
Science is often divided into the biological sciences, the study of living things, and the physical sciences, the study of nonliving things. Examples of biological science courses at Dimond include: biology, marine science, anatomy, genetics, AP biology and AP environmental science. Examples of physical science courses include geology, astronomy, physics, chemistry, AP chemistry and AP physics.

Chemistry is the study of the stuff that makes up the universe and the changes that this material undergoes. It is central to all the other sciences since living and nonliving things are made of the same material, the elements. To understand how a bacteria divides, how lead can poison the body, why eggs, sugar and flour and baking soda can make a cake and why an ice cube floats on water, you must understand chemistry. Thus, many colleges require chemistry in high school.

In this course you do more than learn the basic concepts of chemistry. Chemistry also involves solving mathematical problems and you will learn logical problem solving techniques that can be applied other parts of your life. For many people chemistry is a difficult subject because we discuss the behavior of atoms and molecules that we cannot see or touch. With enough patience and interest anyone can be successful in this class and learn the fundamentals of chemistry. It is my pledge to guide and show you how interesting and useful chemistry is.
