US GOVERNMENT, P. 6

Class Introduction:

Field Experience Government
Fall ‘12

• You need to complete 40 service hours on the political campaign of your choice.

• Evaluation will be by the volunteer coordinator and/or campaign manager.

• Evaluation will be based on the number of hours logged, the quality of your work, your weekly journals, and your class attendance.

• You will be expected to carry out a variety of tasks on the campaign, not just stuffing envelopes. The degree of responsibility that you are given on a campaign is dependent on the level of your skills and your enthusiasm.

• You are representing Steller as well as yourself on the campaign. It is expected that you will be punctual with the schedule that you work out with the campaign and notify the volunteer coordinator/campaign manager at least two days in advance if you need to make a schedule change.

• While the quarter will be over before the election, I strongly encourage you to help out with the campaign until election night. It is very exciting to be at your campaign headquarters or at the Egan Center on the night of the election and a good wrap-up to your work on the campaign. Often most of the need for volunteers takes place in the last two weeks of the campaign, so keep that in mind. I am willing to submit your grade after the election. The absolute deadline to have your work submitted for a grade is Monday, November 12. At this point, I will grade you based upon what you have already turned in.

• It is best to schedule at least a few hours of work at the campaign every week rather than trying to cram in all of your hours at the end.

• You need to select your campaign and begin work by Monday, September 3rd.

• We will have sixth hour class in my room on Thursday, September 19 and Thursday, October 17 to share campaign experiences. All evaluations and journals are due on the 14th, unless you have chosen to work later on the campaign and would like to submit your paperwork after the election. Be warned: Make arrangements with your evaluator to get your logs and evaluations done immediately after the campaign as they tend to leave town quickly for well-deserved vacations.

You will turn in a weekly journal each Friday on a separate sheet of paper. Be sure to Include your name and the date. In the journal, explain what you did during the week and your impressions of the tasks you were involved in. Remember, this is due every Friday and is worth 20 percent of your grade.
