LANGUAGE ARTS

Class Introduction:

The students are exposed to Language Arts from 9:00-10:20 everyday. We study intensely reading, writing, listening and speaking. Some of the facets that I concentrate on include phonics, daily oral language, vocabulary expansion, and spelling. This is where I need the most help from volunteers. To have an adult read with an individual or small group during this time is extremely beneficial to the students. Classroom management decreases as the students interest in reading and the successes they encounter increase. Please contact me if you are interested in helping during this time. Homework is usually in the form of reading and writing. Please make sure you are helping your child with homework each night. Practicing the Zoo Phonics until mastery is shown is important in the beginning weeks. I also send home sight words each week that should be memorized and simple decodable books that should be practiced. We are currently learning to write all of our capital letters and the lower case are coming in about a week. Proper form and progression of the strokes is a must. Good habits in kindergarten is going to make writing much easier throughout their educational carreers For fun, I encourage you to check out an online reading site called Tumblebooks. Search this on the internet. The password is "books." Here. you should be looking at the storybooks tab to have the books narrated to your child. Another web site the kids like to do is called Starfall. No password necessary.
