LANGUAGE ARTS - 8TH GRADE GIFTED

Class Introduction:

This survey of literature and writing will develop student’s skills as outlined by the Common Core Standards. This class will provide students with the opportunity to expand and polish reading, writing, research, technology, listening, viewing, and speaking skills while studying a variety of literature genres. Active reading strategies, process writing, and higher order/critical thinking skills will be utilized to analyze and interpret reading selections. Students will connect to their own lives while demonstrating proficiency of writing process through narrative, reflective, descriptive, persuasive, literary analysis, and research writing. Students will demonstrate effective use of technology through a variety of presentation formats.

We will be reading the following novels: Animal Farm by George Orwell, Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson, An American Plague by Jim Murphy, and A Midsummer Nights Dream by William Shakespeare. Students will be expected to read independently 30 minutes each night and record their reading on their reading logs.
