HONORS US HISTORY

Class Introduction:

Welcome Honors United States History!

In this yearlong course, we will trace the development of our nation from the colonization of North America to the present day. We will examine how and why the United States came into existence. We will explore how the founding fathers formed the federal government in a way that ensured it would last. We will delve into the political and social turmoil of the nineteenth century that led our young democracy to split in two and fight a Civil War. We will then look at the reconstruction of the United States and how it grew into an modern industrial nation. We will trace the development of new forms of governments, new types of economies, and new methods of warfare through the World War years. We will examine the rise of the United States as a superpower in the Cold War, all the while exploring the major changes in American culture and society of the past 60 years. Finally we will discuss the modern era including the role of the United Nations, the effects of globalization, the ongoing instability in the Middle East and Africa, and the way the United States has dealt with and will continue to deal with these situations. Throughout the year we will have the opportunity to practice the tools of history, including reading, writing, research, critical thinking, and discussion. By the end of the year I hope you have a much better understanding of our nation’s history, its place in the world, and your role in our society!
