ELEMENTARY HEALTH
Class Introduction:
THE GREAT BODY SHOP is a nationally recognized comprehensive health and substance abuse prevention program used by preschool, elementary and middle schools throughout the US. The program meets all state and national standards and guidelines.THE GREAT BODY SHOP integrates health teaching along with the following:
Substance Abuse Prevention
Social and Emotional Health
Character Education
Violence Prevention (including bullying)
Critical Thinking
Asset Building
Reading, Communication, Technology and other Learning Skills
I hope everyone had a wonderful summer! I am excited to be back for another school year. Health this year will begin at Trailside Elementary on August 26 and run through September 6th. Two week rotations for health classes at Gladys Wood will begin September 9th. Art and health will continue to rotate every two weeks. Our first unit is all about Safety, which is an excellent topic to start the school year! Younger students will learn "15 Ways to Stay out of Trouble" through puppets and song, while the upper grades will focus on what to do in emergencies and all about water, fire and home safety.
All classes will also have a lesson on personal safety during the first quarter as mandated by the Anchorage School District. Trailside lessons will occur the week of September 30th and Gladys Wood lessons will occur the week of October 7th. It is important that you remind your child that no one has permission to touch him or her in unsafe or uncomfortable ways. This includes touching private areas of the body as well as hitting and other types of hurtful behavior. Please talk with your child about trusted adults at home, at school and in the community with whom he or she can discuss safety issues. Knowing that he or she can turn to a number of caring adults is important to your child's sense of well-being. Whenever a child feels hurt, threatened or frightened at school, we ask that he/she tell an adult immediately.
