Course Description:

The Anchorage School District curriculum for English 10 is thematically based for each quarter; however, much of the literature we will cover progresses chronologically, chronicling various movements and events throughout American history

Unit One: Growing Pains – The Quest for American Identity: Enduring Understanding: American literature explores the conflicts that shape our nation; writer’s choice of words reflect their membership in various social, regional, and cultural groups. Core texts: The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Frederick Douglass and To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee

Unit Two: Expansion and Growth – Exploring Frontiers. Enduring Understanding: American literature explores the willingness of Americans to face challenges and explore the unknown. Core text: Anthem, Ayn Rand

Unit Three: A New Century – A Century of Hope. Enduring Understanding: American literature chronicles the optimism of the American spirit. Core texts: A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry and Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck.

Unit Four: One Nation, Many Voices – Where Do We Go from Here? Enduring Understanding: American literature showcases the diversity of the American landscape. Core text: The Crucible, Arthur Miller and The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Slinger


Classroom Policies

1. Respect – Respect yourself, peers, staff and faculty
2. Punctuality – Show up on time and be prepared to work before the tardy bell chimes
3. Preparedness – Bring all required materials to class everyday.
4. Participation – Be actively engaged in class discussion and events
5. Food / Drink – Small snack items and drinks will be allowed at Mr. Campbell’s discretion. If food becomes a distraction or littering becomes a problem, this
privilege will be permanently revoked.
6. Electronic Devices – Stow all cell phones, I-pods, and portable electronic devices during class (per school policy)
7. Bathroom Passes – Passes will be granted at teacher’s discretion. As a general rule, however, I expect students to utilize passing periods for this purpose.
Excessive requests to leave class will result in loss of privileges.
