SAHS - Information and Communication Technology
A comprehensive, 4-year program

The Educational Testing Service has defined ICT literacy proficiency as the ability to use digital technology, communication tools and networks appropriately to solve information problems in order to function in an information society. This includes the ability to use technology as a tool to research, organize, evaluate and communicate information, and the possession of a fundamental understanding of the ethical/legal issues surrounding the access and use of information. Standards are being written on a number of levels to address this. The State of Alaska has formal sections in their Content and Performance Standards for Students. The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) has recently developed the National Educational Technology Standards . A number of years ago, ASD published a list of expectations. My understanding is that the district plans to revisit these. A practice document is posted for the sake of discussion.

Over 4 years, students at South Anchorage High School will be taught a number of skills to further their information literacy and technical skills. These lessons will be presented in sessions with all of the main core subjects, through each of the four years. Classes from other departments may participate as deemed appropriate.

It is hoped that we will fully implement this with the 9th grade during the 2007-08 school year, and as much as we can for the 10th grade. We will then add a year in 2008-09 and 2009-10. We can try to fit appropriate lessons into the higher grades earlier if individual teachers so desire.
